Difference Between Static and Dynamic QR Code

Key takeaways

What is the difference between a static and a dynamic QR code?

A static QR code stores its payload directly in the pattern: for example a URL, contact details or Wi-Fi credentials. The printed pattern cannot be edited. If it contains a URL, however, the page at that URL can still be updated.

A dynamic QR code stores a redirect URL. The provider sends visitors from that URL to the destination you have configured. Changing the destination in your account keeps the printed code the same. See how to change a QR code destination after printing.

Can you edit a static QR code after printing it?

You cannot change the information encoded in the printed pattern. You can change content on a webpage you control without changing its address. If you control the encoded URL, you may also be able to configure a server redirect from that address to a different page.

If you do not control the old URL and cannot restore it or configure a redirect, a code pointing there will need to be replaced. A dynamic service provides a dashboard for managing redirects; it does not make changing webpage content exclusive to dynamic codes.

Which type works for menus and table tents?

A static URL code works well when you own a stable menu address, such as https://your-cafe.example/menu. Change dishes, prices or the PDF served there and the same printed code still reaches the updated menu. See the menu QR guide.

Choose dynamic if your destination may move between URLs or hosts, or you want the provider’s scan analytics and routing tools. Updating your destination then happens in your QR account. Keep the redirect service and cancellation terms in mind before printing.

Which type should you use for other print projects?

Use caseStatic optionWhen dynamic helps
Menus and table tentsA stable menu URL you control; update the page at that addressMove between destinations or measure scans
Guest Wi-FiStore the network details directly; reprint when credentials changeA redirect does not update credentials embedded in a Wi-Fi pattern
Business cardsEmbed fixed contact details, or link to your own updatable contact pageHost an editable contact page and count scans
Payment pagesLink to a stable payment pageChange provider links or maintain an editable payment page
Packaging and flyersLink to a stable landing page you maintainChange campaign destinations and review scan activity

A direct static vCard stores the actual contact details. If those change, make a new code. A static URL to a hosted contact page can keep working as the page changes. Read the vCard guide for the distinction.

What happens when a trial or subscription ends?

Check the provider’s current terms for expiration, scan limits, advertising and cancellation. Do not assume all free plans or all paid plans behave the same way.

As checked on October 30, 2026, QR TIGER lists 3 free dynamic codes with 500 scans per code; its FAQ describes advertising on free-trial codes. See its official pricing and FAQ for current terms.

FutureQR’s static codes are free, need no account and have no provider scan cap or subscription expiry. They still need a readable print and, for links, an available destination. A free account adds 2 editable dynamic codes with unlimited scans. Pro is $12 a month or $99 a year for 100 active dynamic codes.

After cancelling FutureQR Pro, existing live codes keep working at their main destination. Free permits editing your 2 oldest active codes; other active codes stay live but are locked for editing until you resubscribe. Frozen codes remain frozen. Advanced Pro features stop; review the cancellation details before choosing a plan.

Do dynamic codes scan faster or more reliably?

A short URL can produce a less dense pattern than a long payload, which may help a camera read a small print. That is a property of payload length and design, not a guarantee that dynamic codes are faster. A static code containing a short URL can also be compact.

After decoding, a dynamic link adds a network redirect before loading the destination. Its speed depends on the network and service. Both types can fail because of print size, contrast, damage or an unavailable website; dynamic codes also depend on the redirect service. Read how to troubleshoot scanning and test a printed proof.

Can you turn a printed static code into a dynamic one?

You cannot replace the URL or other data in the printed pattern. If you control its existing URL, you can configure a redirect behind that address. This changes where visitors go without changing the printed code. Otherwise, keep the old destination available if possible and use a new code for a new URL.

FAQ

Does static mean the page is frozen?

No. Only the encoded data is fixed. A webpage at the same URL can be updated as often as its owner needs.

Do static codes expire?

The pattern has no built-in expiry. A code must remain readable, and any URL it contains must remain available. Embedded contact or Wi-Fi details can become outdated.

Do I need Pro for an editable menu link?

FutureQR Free includes 2 editable dynamic codes. Pro adds more active codes and advanced tools. You can also use a free static code pointing to a stable menu URL you manage yourself.
